Rainy Day Music

It’s the first official blog entry, and I thought I’d get things started with a bit of music. This week in the UK the weather has pretty much been rain, clouds, wind, and more rain. I’m personally a huge fan of stormy weather - I’ll pick it over a heatwave any day - but I know for most people, rain puts a dampener on there mood. So of course, the solution is a playlist of rainy day music! Here are just a few of the songs that cheer me up when the rain is coming down - or just if I’m feeling a bit glum. I should warn you that my music taste is all over the place, so perhaps not everything will tie in!
Anyone who knows me knows that this is one of my all-time favourite songs of all time. As soon as I hear that bass my mood will soar! This is one of those songs that makes me want to run around (I think the angry dance scene in Billy Elliot is partly to blame for that) and definitely stops me moping.
When I first heard this song on the radio, I spent days googling the words “oh woah oh oh” in the smallest hope of finding it. I really love this song and is another pick-me-up. Also, the music video is enough to make anyone laugh, even if you don’t like the song!
Jim and the Povolos are my go-to “I am sad and want to dance” band. Their music is so relaxing but definitely cheers me up if things are ever looking rainy!
Here’s where the music switches up a bit! I never thought I’d be a fan of rap. but I am completely obsessed with Watsky’s beat and lyrics. To be honest, I’d recommend anything of his, but this is one of my favourites off his new album.
Here’s another song that I just love for no reason in particular.  It’s great to stick on if I ever need cheering up, and I find I’ll go through phases of playing it constantly!
How can you miss a song about rain off a rainy day playlist?! I really love The Beatles - in fact I was pretty much obsessed with them when I was 12/13 - and I love this song.
I thought I’d finish on something a bit more chilled out. This song is really calming, and definitely one of my favourite Oasis songs.
I think it’s safe to say this music playlist was all over the place, but I really hope you like a few of my favourite songs!
What songs do you like to listen to when you’re down? Do you listen to any of these? Let me know!
Until next time,
Martha

Welcome to Brainsorbeauty!

What is brainsorbeauty?

Brainsorbeauty is a blog all about celebrating who we are as girls and women. Countless times we have been asked - “would you rather brains or beauty?”. We’re here to say we’ll take both, and more! Packed with make-up tips, book reviews, recipes, as well as in-depth discussions, we’re declaring that we don’t have to be “tomboys” or “girly-girls”. We don’t have to be “smart” or “superficial”; we can be who we want, breaking stereotypes, social pressures, but while being as feminine as we want to. Feminism is important to us, but it’s also important to be proud about our passions and what we enjoy doing. That’s why brainsorbeauty doesn’t just talk about social issues. We want to talk about and share our passions - and invite others to share theirs - in a safe environment.

Who are brainsorbeauty?

We are two sixteen year old girls who are growing up in a world where we are made to feel increasingly aware of our gender. We’ve come to realise that we need to do something about it - being a girl is not a bad thing; it’s something we should be proud of.

Why is brainsorbeauty here?

As recently as 2013, we would not have counted ourselves as “feminists”. This was because everything we had heard about feminism had been negative. “Feminists are angry!” “Feminists are man haters!” In fact, we even came across people who directly seemed to be opposed to equality, and converted us to their cause. It’s only in the past year, after feminism has come back into the light, that we’ve realised its true importance. Emma Watson’s #HeForShe speech is a prime example of the type of thing that has inspired us. We really hope you jump on board with our cause, and enjoy our regular blog posts as well as our more topical or serious ones. We'll have new blog posts every Friday; one week from Martha, the next from Laura, and the third a discussion post from both of us.
Until next time,

Laura and Marthax
